“It’s a great start for this season,” Alonso said after the race. We didn’t anticipate being so competitive. I believe the goal in 2023 was to be in the fight with the midfield, possibly leading that midfield, and ultimately get close to the best three teams.
“Even a podium maybe was not on the radar in 2023, and we found ourselves with the second best car today in Bahrain, of the whole weekend, just behind Red Bull. This comes as a surprise, but we are extremely proud and pleased with the work done at Silverstone in the factory.
“I want to congratulate everyone. Let’s appreciate this moment and hopefully create a strong 2023 campaign from here, getting closer and closer to the top guys.”
When asked if Aston Martin might need to reset their goals for the coming season, Alonso replied, “Let’s see. I had the same reaction during testing, like it was too good to be true, and you’re always expecting that… You will take a step back and return to reality. The performance, however, appears to be genuine.
“Let’s see what happens in Jeddah. I’m excited to visit Jeddah and Australia, two very different circuits. I believe that in Bahrain, we were successful in areas that we don’t find in Jeddah or Australia. If we perform well in the next two events, I believe we will have a very successful 2023.”
