Anne Hathaway has revealed that she quietly lived with a frightening health condition for nearly ten years, opening up for the first time about how she was left legally blind in one eye before undergoing life changing surgery.
The Oscar winning actress, 43, made the surprising disclosure during an appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast podcast, where she candidly explained how an early onset cataract dramatically impacted her eyesight throughout much of her adult life.
A cataract, described by the Mayo Clinic as a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, can cause symptoms including blurred vision, faded colors, and increased sensitivity to glare.
While commonly associated with aging, Hathaway revealed she developed the condition unusually early.

The “Mother Mary” star explained that her deteriorating vision became so severe that she was effectively unable to see properly out of her left eye for years.
“It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye and I wound up getting surgery,” Hathaway shared during the interview.

Looking back, the actress admitted she had not fully realized just how much her eyesight had declined until after the procedure restored it.
“I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum,” she recalled while speaking to hosts Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli.

The surgery ultimately transformed Hathaway’s daily life, restoring clarity, color, and depth that she said she had unknowingly lost over time. Now, the actress says she approaches every day with a renewed appreciation for something many people take for granted.
“I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it’s a miracle,” Hathaway said.
The actress also reflected on how fortunate she feels to have had access to modern medical advancements, acknowledging that the outcome may have been very different for earlier generations.
“Two generations back,” Hathaway noted, the vision saving surgery “wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.”

Fans quickly flooded social media after clips from the interview resurfaced online, expressing disbelief that Hathaway had quietly managed such a serious health issue while continuing one of Hollywood’s busiest careers.
“Anne Hathaway just casually revealing she was legally blind out of her left eye for ten years on a random podcast with 87,000 subscribers. Girl, hello??” one shocked fan wrote on X.

A third echoed the disbelief shared by many online, commenting, “Oh my god?? The amount of movies she did during those ten years and she never mentioned it.”
Hathaway revealed the health struggle while promoting her latest project, Mother Mary, in which she takes on the role of the film’s titular pop star.
